Railroad and post office map of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Construction of the Green Bay & Lake Pepin RR began in 1870 with clearing and grading of the stretch between Fort Howard on the west bank of the Fox River and New London. The first rails were spiked in Green Bay on November 2, 1871 and the push westward was begun. Rails reached New London on December 19 of the same year. Regularly scheduled train service began on January 23, 1872.

This 1871 map was published by H. H. Lloyd & Co. of New York. It is now part of the Railroads Map Collection of the Library of Congress. It shows the GB&LP extending to Northport, 6.5 miles west of New London. This is likely where the construction crews stopped for the winter of the first year of railroad construction.
