Bob Warrick, author of The Ann Arbor Railroad in Color, History & Operations 1869 1976 (Morning Sun Books, due early summer 2008) has this question for GB&W railfans:

HO scale SHPX 46028
From Accurail.

CRDX 4805.
From the collection of Bob Warrick.

I am currently working on an article about a handful of unique cars that the Ann Arbor / DT&I had under lease in the mid 1960s. The cars were ACF Industries SHPX 46025-46029 and were reportedly used in malt service across Lake Michigan.

Do you have any information on these cars... They carried the SHPX reporting marks but had ANN ARBOR on their sides.

My interest in these cars began as I was writing the book, however space did not allow anything on the cars and now I hope to finish an article on them. An added incentive is that Accurail has just come out with an HO scale kit of the car (#2081).

A different group of cars that were reported to also be malt cars were Chicago Freight Car Leasing Co. cars CDRX 4850-4874; however it appears they were in dry chemical service for Wyandotte Chemicals (now BASF). Craig Wilson reports the following on those CDRX cars:

I have found entries in the car ferry manifests in July 1970 showing empty movements from Consolidated Papers (now Stora Enso), Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin to Wyandotte Chemical, Wyandotte, Mich. (Routing GBW-AA-DTI). Westward loaded movements do not show origins nor destinations but it reasonable to assume that the locations are the same. Loads are listed as "calcium" "cal-carb" "carbonate" and "soda."

Any information you may have would be most useful.
