1944 Timetable

Up ] New London - 1944 ]

Green Bay & Western employee timetable  No. 71, effective May 14, 1944.  Includes scheduled trains, special instructions, and more.

This is an interesting timetable in the fact that it was the last to include trains on the Sturgeon Bay Division and the Waupaca and Iola Branch. On June 1, 1947 the Sturgeon Bay Division began operating as the independent Ahnapee & Western Railway, while the Waupaca - Scandinavia branch of the Green Bay Route was abandoned later that same summer.

The two premier time freights on the system, Nos. 1 and 2, were scheduled to meet at 11:24 am at Hatfield.  Overall, there are 24 scheduled trains; compare this to only 14 scheduled trains on the 1948 timetable after the end of World War II and abandonment of much of the branchline service.

Track improvements for the Class D locomotives had begun but was not yet complete, as is evidenced by the speed restrictions on the bridges at Wisconsin Rapids and Winona.  These locomotives were added to the roster in 1937 and 1939.
